Business Model or Mission Canvas: Mapping the Current and Future Operations of Your Organization
Training Reserved for RQD Members
For some of us, the business models sustaining the dance sector—marked by a reliance on public funding—seem to be reaching their limits. Funding bodies increasingly emphasize the need to rethink these models, particularly through shared resources and philanthropy. However, the dance community is already highly collaborative, and for the vast majority of dance organizations, philanthropy remains a significant challenge.
We understand the hesitation to embrace changes that could lead to difficult situations, especially as we continue to advocate strongly for the necessity of arts funding.
But let’s approach this conversation with an open mind and take a deep dive into the idea of a “business model.” Let’s try to understand it, make peace with it, and perhaps even find ways to use this entrepreneurial concept—here reframed as a “mission canvas” to better reflect our organizations’ purposes—to our advantage.
Using a nine-block mission canvas inspired by Business Model You (developed by Tim Clark in collaboration with Alexander Osterwalder and Yves Pigneuret) and through an interactive analysis of different scenarios tailored to our reality, you will gain a clear understanding of what a business model is. You will also acquire tools to visualize, assess, and strengthen your own mission canvas while identifying potential vulnerabilities.
