Scores for dancing together
Dancing with other people requires us to navigate various structures, rules, and codes, while balancing personal impulse with collective listening. In my work, I cooperate with performers to design improvisational scores that reflect our shared interests, while also making room for disagreement and individual agency.
In this workshop we will explore a variety of scores, developed during the creation of Memory Palace, and other recent projects in order to experience different ways of dancing together, both in pairs and as a group. Pleasure, resistance, rhythm and compromise will all come into play.
Born in North Carolina and based in Montreal, Dorian Nuskind-Oder is a choreographer and cultural worker. Actively involved with her local dance milieu, she is an artist-member of the collectively run production company Je suis Julio, as well as a board member of the Regroupement québécois de la danse. Her works include Speed Glue (2019) a choreographic score for two table tennis players; Orchestrated Accidents (2018) a durational performance installation/game about destiny, Biergarten fur Alchimisten (2016) a lecture performance about alchemy and artificial intelligence, and Memory Palace (2016) a performance for three people with a background in social or folkloric dance forms. Dorian’s work has recently been presented locally by the Festival TransAmériques, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, the Darling Foundry, Tangente, and the Musée d’art contemporain des Laurentides, as well as internationally at the Chinese National Table Tennis Museum in Shanghai (ROC), Chapter Arts Centre (UK), the CURRENTSESSIONS (US), La Quinzaine de la Danse (FR) and the Künstlerhaus Bethanien (DE).
