Workshop : Gabriel Dharmoo – Vocal exploration
Objective
This vocal improvisation workshop is designed to let your voices resonate collectively and awaken an array of unheard sounds that lie dormant in your throat. The workshop is for anyone who is curious to explore the full potential of their vocal instrument, especially those who think they can’t sing – no musical experience necessary. The approach is artistic, community-driven, freeing and playful!
Content
The pool of activities includes: soundpainting (improvised choral conduction), song-based work, voice/movement exploration, improvisation in small groups, conceptual musical pieces, graphic scores, music listening and a variety of other vocal games and exercises.
My approach aims to be inclusive: if someone is breathing, they have a body capable of resonance, sound and voice. That said, my approach relies heavily on listening and vocal sounds, and I convey information orally only. Many of my exercises include visual elements, such as musical direction given through hand and body gestures. Many of my exercises incorporate movement, but this is optional and voluntary, with several possible variations depending on the participants’ comfort levels.
