The RUBBERBAND Method

Description
Developed by choreographer Victor Quijada specifically for his company, the RUBBERBAND Method is a choreographic movement vocabulary that is now taught worldwide through university programs, workshops, and masterclasses.
Inspired by the raw energy of hip-hop and breaking as well as the precision and formalism of classical dance, Quijada has been breaking down barriers between dance forms for more than two decades. Through the RUBBERBAND Method, participants are introduced to a movement vocabulary born from the intersection of urban and contemporary dance. The training emphasizes interpretation, decision-making, rhythmic variation, and partnering skills. This movement technique encourages fluid transitions between vertical and horizontal movement, explores the use of the body to shape space, and prepares dancers with classical and contemporary training for floor work.
RUBBERBAND Method workshops are designed for dancers seeking to expand and diversify their movement language.

Instructor
From an early age, Victor Quijada was immersed in hip-hop culture. Mentored by postmodern dance pioneer Rudy Perez, he went on to perform with the Twyla Tharp Project, became a member of Eliot Feld’s Ballet Tech in New York, and later danced as a demi-soloist with Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal.
Drawing on this diverse artistic background, he developed the RUBBERBAND Method, a choreographic language rooted in hip-hop while integrating classical, urban, and contemporary influences. In 2002, he founded RUBBERBAND, a company that has since performed on stages around the world.
Throughout his career, Quijada has received numerous honours, including the Bonnie Bird North American Award and the Peter Darrell Choreography Award in 2003, followed by the Princess Grace Award Choreographic Fellowship in 2010. In 2025, he was named a Companion of the Ordre des arts et des lettres du Québec in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the performing arts.
