This combo workshop is a deep-dive into task-based movement training. Inspired by the Fighting Monkey Practice, we explore task-based movement and how its application in personal practice for dancers is vital for longevity.

In Inspire by FM, solo and partnered task-based movement situations are created and investigated through the use of Fighting Monkey tools, relational partner work and directed improvisation. We cover smart training for instinctual/reactive movement, elastic capacity for power and mobility, how to identify ineffective and inefficient movement patterns/affectations, and how to use partnered training/physical tools/coordinations in order to hone body awareness, shared body empathy and communication.

Through the lens of Fighting Monkey Practice, Inspire by FM: The Floor works with task-based floor-dance skills (crawling/sliding/rolling/falling/diving) via improvisations and set material. The focus is on how to move in and out of the floor powerfully and ease-fully, and on identifying/un-training (potentially) injurious blind-spots/affectations.

Elke Schroeder is a mover. A seasoned dancer and performer, her 20 year relationship with dance and its consequent body fatigue led her to seek healing. At first she went to yoga and after experiencing positive changes she became a teacher, graduating from the Octopus Garden Teachers Training and Mentorship programs in 2008.

In addition to yoga and dance, Elke’s movement background includes floorwork, acrobatics, functional movement and martial arts. Her greatest movement influence is the Fighting Monkey Practice, a task-based, longevity practice created by Jozef Frucek and Linda Kapetanea (of RootlessRoot); Elke is a recognized FM instructor. In addition, she owes much credit to her other main teachers David Zambrano (creator of Flying Low), Inaki Azpillaga (Ultima Vez) and Peter Jasko (Les SlovaKs dance collective).

Elke leads a practice that is fluid, strong, and creative. She encourages a sense of play, and her teachings provoke curiosity towards revealing our body’s intrinsic wisdom. Bringing knowledge from her dance and movement training, Elke is interested in everyone practicing individually but in community, and offering a practice that is both challenging and accessible to all. She is still an active creator and performer of contemporary dance and travels her work throughout Canada and abroad.
