The workshop will be presented as a series of kinetic explorations combining skills and practices of rolling, releasing, giving and supporting weight. Drawn from various systems that aim to establish connections that develop a freedom and efficiency of movement and simultaneously awaken the senses and strengthen the nervous system. Special attention will be paid to increasing the functional capacity and fluid articulation of the spine. Working from a supple, dynamic core participants will be led through task-based exercises to generate movement that further explores the concepts of gravity and anti-gravity while expanding their range of spatial awareness. These explorations will feed the development of material that integrates the physical possibilities and qualities of an unstable equilibrium with intention and presence.

Dana Gingras is a choreographer, performer, film-maker and teacher. She founded Animals of Distinction (AoD) in 2006. It was initially formed as a satellite organization beneath the larger auspices of acclaimed company The Holy Body Tattoo which she co-founded in 1993. AoD is the framework that Dana uses to explore how choreographic and kinaesthetic thought can extend into different art forms and curated collaborations. The work of AoD has been presented nationally and internationally across many different platforms including live performance, film, design, visual art and new media. As a teacher Dana is a Specialized Level I and Level II GYROKINESIS Master Trainer and a GYROTONIC Master Trainer having studied closely with the system’s founder Juliu Horvath since 2002. She has taught at numerous dance festivals, studios and universities both nationally and internationally. Dana is an Associate Dance Artist of Canada’s National Arts Centre and Long Term Artist in Residence at CCOV.
