Victoria May

Dancer, Choreographer, Instructor

Victoria May is a dance artist and teacher. She has danced professionally in Canada and Europe for 20 years and has been an active member of Montreal’s contemporary dance scene since 2007.

She received her early training with Celia Franca and Joyce Shietze at the School of Dance in Ottawa and graduated with distinction from the Royal Winnipeg Ballet's Professional Division and went on to dance for notable companies such as the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the Gothenburg Ballet (Sweden), Danish Dance Theatre (Denmark) and has worked freelance as a dancer, teacher and choreographer.

She has had the opportunity to work with Robert North, Robert Cohan, Birgit Cullberg, Jo Strømgren, Jorma Uotinen, Tim Feldmann, Tim Rushton, Jens Bjerregaard, Helen Saunders and Camilla Stage among others.

Since moving to Montreal she has worked with Louise Bédard Danse (Enfin Vous Zestes), Système D/Dominique Porte (Plus seule qu’en solo, Ulysses, nous et les sirens) and Thea Patterson/Peter Trosztmer (Rhyming Couplets).

In 2012 she was part of Danse-Cité’s 'Traces Interpretes' where she co-produced and performed in an evening of dance collaborating with dancer Eve Garnier and choreographers Louise Bedard, Martin Belanger, Anders Chrstiansen and Dominique Porte.

Victoria has received The Duke and Duchess of York Award (CA), Arnold Spohr Award (CA), The Young Performers Bursary Award (CA), Augustinius Fund (DK), Danish Actors Blankbandsmidler (DK) and the Toyota Fund (DK) as well as support from both the Canada Council and Conseil des arts et letters du Quebec.

Currently she is working with the NOES collective, of which she is a founding member on an in-situ project called ‘To Go Somewhere’ and is teaching at various dance schools in Montreal.

She has been teaching both ballet and contemporary dance at The Royal Danish Ballet School, The Royal Danish Opera Academy, Danish Dance Theatre, Dansens Hus (DK), Skånes Dance Theatre (SE), Oure College of Sports (DK), The School of Dance (Ottawa, ON) and at the Quinte Ballet School in Belleville, ON.

VIctoria is a member of the Regroupement québécois de la danse, The Dancer's Transition Resource Centre and the Canadian Dance Assembly..
