FLY 2024 Choreographic Creation Residency

Choreographic Creation Residency:
Creation and Production Project by the École de danse contemporaine de Montréal

Submission Deadline: June 12, 2024, at 4 PM

The École de danse contemporaine de Montréal (EDCM) is calling for applications from choreographers for a choreographic commission as part of the Fly // Creation and Production Project.

This six-week residency will allow for the creation of a 30-minute choreographic piece for six recently graduated dancers from EDCM, selected through auditions. The piece will be publicly performed in December 2024 at the Espace orange of the Wilder Building – Espace Danse.

This project aims to support the professional integration of emerging contemporary dance performers.

ELIGIBILITY

– Must have at least two years of professional experience in contemporary dance choreography and have created at least two works in a professional context.
– Demonstrate a serious approach and a sense of commitment.
– Be available for all 120 hours dedicated to the project.

PROVISIONAL SCHEDULE

– 90 hours of creation spread over 6 weeks (see provisional schedule)
– 6 hours of rehearsals
– 24 hours for theater entry and performances

Key Dates:

– Selection of performers: Friday, August 23, 2024
– Creation period: from October 28 to December 6, 2024
– Provisional schedule (subject to change): Monday to Friday from 2 PM to 5 PM, except Wednesday from 8 AM to 11 AM
– Theater entry: December 9 to 11, 2024
– Performances: from December 11 to 14, 2024, at the Espace orange of the Wilder Building – Espace Danse (Tangente)

TERMS

– The school is responsible for hiring and paying the lighting and costume design staff and a technician for the creation of a soundtrack.
– Fee: According to EDCM’s remuneration policy – travel and accommodation expenses are not covered.

EVALUATION CRITERIA

– Relevance of the project to the objectives of Fly.
– Potential of the piece to reach a wide audience in a broadcast perspective.
– Enhancement of performers’ virtuosity through proposed gestures.
– Organizational ability in working with six performers.
– Feasibility of the project within the context of creation and production.

TO SUBMIT YOUR PROJECT

– Fill out the form. A video excerpt of recent work will be requested.
– Send an email to Ariane Labelle-Côté with:
1. A letter of intent including the general ideation of the project (maximum two pages).
2. A curriculum vitae or biography.

Complete applications – form and documents requested by email – must be sent no later than Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at 4 PM.

Selected candidates will be invited to an interview during the week of June 17, 2024, and the decision will be made no later than June 21, 2024. The selected choreographer must be available for the audition day for the selection of performers on Friday, August 23, 2024, between 10 AM and 4 PM.
