WHAT IS IT?
Practicing Community is a collectively-driven practice where proposals, questions, and presence are exchanged between peers. This model values co-creation of space dedicated to practice, mutual responsibility through regular participation and the fluid circulation of roles. Teaching and learning are considered as shared experiential processes, not bound by authority. A commitment of eight sessions is required, with a few drop-in spots for those with limited capacity for recurring engagement. The goal is
to offer an accessible practice space for artists where meaningful embodiment and growth are possible.
Each session follows a simple structure:
• 30 minutes solo: arrive, prepare at your own rhythm.
• 30 to 90 minutes shared practice: based on proposals determined in advance by participants – The
Collective Calendar will be sent after registration.
• 30 to 60 minutes further exploration: spontaneous continuation through movement or conversation,
solo or in a group.
The container is clear so that the content may remain open, responsive, and shaped by the group.
Shared Values
We hold space for difference and negotiation, not consensus. This means practices can be in dialogue
without needing to agree, and proposals don’t need to resolve into conclusions. What matters is our
capacity to stay curious, engaged, and open to change. This fluid leadership model resists individualistic
and hierarchical models of artistic development. Instead, we try to build a collective space where
practices influence one another and where no single voice dominates. The goal is to explore ways of
doing that, open up new possibilities and value the diversity of knowledge in Montréal’s dance
community.
*Black Dance Series*
From October 13 to November 7, we will host the Black Dance series, an initiative by Sarah Elola, which offers a new space-time within the 2nd edition of Practicing Community to support more voices and perspectives from Afro-descendant movement and body-based practices, rooted in the same values of community and accessibility. This series is an invitation to break down boundaries and hierarchies between the wide-ranging practices encompassed in the spectrum of Black Dances, in order to weave fertile connections between them. The series welcomes anyone, researcher, artist, creator, pedagogue, choreographer or performer, who is interested in or dedicated to Black Dances and their permutations (from traditional to contemporary forms, from urban to diasporic, from Sabar to Jazz, from Africa to the Americas and beyond) and who wishes to dive into their art or interest while drawing from the variety as well as the shared essence of knowledge in this field.
WHO IS THIS FOR?
Movement artists who are motivated, reliable, and have the capacity and curiosity to work on collective
potential, coming from varied ages, experiences, and backgrounds.
