Rick Tjia’s approach invites you to move beyond simply producing movement and relying on intuition to master the psychological, structural and emotional mechanisms behind your choices. This first unit gives you the foundations to do so.
The Skills you will Develop
- Fundamental discernment: distinguish between dance and choreography, creation and structure, choreography and directing — and discover what can be protected by copyright.
- Mastery of purpose and impact: define the who, what, why and how of your pieces and understand what contributes to producing the desired effect on an audience.
- Critical eye: analyze works and question your choices so you can better defend your artistic decisions.
- Structure and strategy: stop relying on chance. Combine research, instinct and experimentation to build a planned approach that makes the most of constraints.

Earn a Professional Development Certificate
Upon completion of Unit 1, passing an exam leads to a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) certificate issued by International Performing Arts & Theatre (I-PATH), a UK-based performing arts examination organization.
Wherever you are in the world, UK accreditation is a definite advantage!
The exam is in English, but the questions can be displayed in French and you may answer them in French.
Practical Training, at Your Own Pace
- Online group training
- One two-hour session per month
- From November 2026 to June 2027
Between sessions, you will complete various assignments on your own schedule:
- create choreographies;
- watch works by established choreographers;
- prepare presentations;
- write analyses.
Who Is This Training For?
Are you a dancer who has never received training in choreography? Gain professional-level foundations and tools to take on your first creative projects.
Are you a beginning or experienced choreographer? Consolidate your skills and discover a different perspective on creation that goes beyond composing and assembling movements: think of your choreography as a work of art, assert your intentions and create the effect you want to have on your audience.
No previous experience in choreography is required.
Rick Tjia: More Than 30 Years in Dance and Creation
A former principal dancer with La La La Human Steps, with whom he performed in more than 25 countries, Rick Tjia has a truly international background. He also spent 16 years as a dance talent scout with Cirque du Soleil, evaluating artists for numerous productions. An acrobatic choreographer for Volta, he is now CEO of Choreography Online. This breadth of experience informs the distinctive approach he brings to teaching choreography.
