Benjamin Herrero

It was in 2008 that Benjamin Herrero discovered contemporary dance during a workshop led by Dutch choreographer Herman Diephuis. He was captivated by the feeling of connection to the ground, to his body, and by the infinite possibilities offered through movement. From that moment on, he continued exploring these ideas through a wide range of dance workshops and trainings, as well as yoga, qigong, massage therapy, and various somatic practices.

Benjamin further developed his creativity and movement practice through the guidance of choreographers such as Marinette Dozeville, Suzanne Miller, and Laura Toma. Later, with the support of massage therapist Jacques-François Aylestock, he trained in massage therapy, drawing on his background as a dancer to develop a more expressive, creative, and liberated approach to touch.

After completing a Certificate in Critical Studies of Sexualities, Benjamin enrolled in the Graduate Diploma in Somatic Education at UQAM, seeking to open new pathways toward greater inclusion and diversity of bodies. His exploration of embodied knowledge continues to evolve. In 2025, he began a Master's degree in Dance at Université du Québec à Montréal, where he is expanding his practice through a research-creation project investigating queer pedagogy as applied to his teaching of recreational dance for adults.

His approach to movement is inspired by the embodied dimensions of feminist and queer theories, as well as by a variety of holistic and somatic approaches to lived experience. The Reclaiming the Body course, which he has been teaching since 2018 (at La Caserne and Studio 303), emerged from these experiences, influences, and his desire to share his knowledge of the moving body with others.
