Being a contortionist does not mean “being flexible.” It is an accessible physical technique that can be learned, practiced, and developed over time. There is no secret. Contortion is a hyper-awareness of the body’s internal sensations and an intimate dialogue with its limits—its allies. In constant dialogue with one’s own body, contortion seeks to open it rather than bend it. Without ever pushing your limits, we will learn to work with them, with total respect for the body.

With the aim of demystifying the movement and range of the spine, this workshop is for all body artists who want to improve their flexibility; discover a new physical technique; gain new tools to integrate flexibility into their practice; develop confidence and knowledge that will allow them to venture into specific work on the spine; and embark on a new journey into the inner sensations of their bodies and open themselves up to a new approach to them.

These classes will be based on specific active flexibility and stretching exercises. We will listen to and serve the body in order to address posture and endurance and explore the possibilities of its range of motion.

Goals

  • Improve flexibility
  • Discover a new body technique

Facilitator

Andréane Leclerc is a Quebec artist, contortionist, performer, choreographer, and teacher. Trained at the National Circus School in Montreal, she diverts contortion from its traditional uses to make it a somatic and philosophical practice, focused on listening, perception, and human relationships. With a master’s degree in theater (UQAM), she co-founded Nadère arts vivants in 2013, a company with which she creates transdisciplinary works presented internationally.

Her work questions the limits of the body and the norms of spectacle, promoting a sensitive, collective, and ecological approach to creation. She teaches contortion and dramaturgy around the world and currently serves as artistic and general director of Nadère.
