Bettina Szabo

Chorégraphe, Interprète, Éclairagiste, Répétiteur / directeur des répétitions, Vidéaste

Born in Uruguay, Bettina Szabo is a dancer and choreographer living in Montreal since 2007. She studied with Hebe Rosa in Montevideo (Uruguay), and Rami Be’er at Ga’aton (Israel). She graduates the EDCM in 2013 in Dance and obtains her BFA Choreography at Concordia University in 2017 (Montreal, Canada). She follows many workshops with renowned artist such as Marie Chouinard, Robin Orlyn, Hildegard De Vyust and Guy Cools.

 

As dancer, she is interested on collaborative processes based on somatic explorations. She dances for the Ballet de Camara de Montevideo (2004-2007), the Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company (KCDC) (2010), the collective Interlope (2013-2014) for Jason Cutler (2019) and Paul Chambers (2021-2023) Yasmin Andersen (currently). She receives many awards and bursaries both as a dancer and choreographer; Best show, Best choreography and Best performance for La Movida Joven in Montevideo given by the Ministry of culture and sports of Uruguay, Dance Journey from MASA and the KCDC.

 

As choreographer. she becomes fellow of La DSLR in Quebec and the Royaumont Foundation. She has done residencies in renowned centers such as Circuit-Est, the MAI and the Diane Dufresne Cultural center in Quebec as well as La Tabakalera in San Sebastian and La Briqueterie and Micadanses in Paris. Her work is supported by the Canada, Quebec, and Montreal council of arts.

 

Her creations are interdisciplinary marked by a profound collaboration with music and visual arts. She creates Noir=+(2014) Sequelles (2016) Habitat (2020-2021) Zeruki (2022). Her work has been presented in Geneva, Lyon, Vienna, Montreal, Toronto, Mantes La Jolie, Ramallah, Bilbao, Busan, Quebec City, Nuremberg, Lubljana, and Edinburgh. She is often invited to collaborate with musicians such as the Bakalari ensemble and the composer Laurence Jobidon. She creates art-videos both collaboratively and alone such as SKIN presented at the Form Festival, as well as Explosives presented at Filiministes Barcelona and Festival Côte Court Paris and Immortelles presented at RDIM and distributed by SPIRA. Currently, Bettina is touring Habitat and working in her new creation inspired of menopause Hélichryse for with support of Alma Darama in Portugal, IRCAM in France and FRLAK in Montréal.

 

Bettina advices in different committees as representative of cultural diversity in organizations like La DSR, RQD, and Jean Pierre Perrault foundation. She mentors emerging artists on choreography and dramaturgy, and teaches interdisciplinary creation workshops sharing her creative methodology
