Charo Foo Tai Wei
Chorégraphe, Enseignant.e, Interprète
Charo Foo Tai Wei is a multidisciplinary artist who weaves connections between cultures and forms of expression. Trained in classical Chinese dance, she later pursued contemporary dance studies at L’École de danse de Québec. From 2007 to 2013, she performed internationally in The Blue Dragon by Robert Lepage with Ex Machina, combining acting, dance, and choreography.
Her encounter with Butoh in 2015, under the guidance of Natsu Nakajima and Yukio Waguri, marked a turning point in her artistic journey. Her choreographic language now intertwines the refined precision of classical Chinese dance with the visceral physicality of Butoh, giving rise to works that explore trauma, transformation, identity, and resilience.
Her solo Jin Gu Bang (The Golden Stick Ritual) was selected for the CanAsian Dance Festival 2019, which was co-presented by Tangente and Festival Accès Asie. Yearning premiered at Tangente for the 30th anniversary of Festival Accès Asie. She has since appeared at the Stratford Festival and performed in works by Red Snow Collective, MBC Productions at Fringe Montréal, and, most recently, in Osez! 2025 with Karine Ledoyen, Karine Ponties, and Bruno Pradet.
