The Great Tamer – Dimitris Papaioannou
La scène en pente est recouverte de plaques anthracites amovibles évoquant des strates de cimetières ou des couches géologiques : des trappes se soulèvent à la dérobée, le sol se retourne et ondoie, les corps des interprètes disparaissent dans les entrailles de la terre. Avec cette fable en noir et blanc, véritable orgie d’images, l’artiste grec Dimitris Papaioannou met en scène l’étreinte perpétuelle de la vie et du trépas. Sans début ni fin, cette création onirique évoque les mythes anciens et modernes et conjure les plus grands chefs d’oeuvre de l’art visuel dans une ode au plus puissant des créateurs : la mort. Le chaos du monde n’aura jamais été aussi poétique.
Artiste visuel et bédéiste reconnu, Dimitris Papaioannou se tourne vers les arts performatifs, en tant que concepteur, chorégraphe, interprète et fondateur du réputé Edafos Dance Theatre. Depuis 1986, il signe ses propres créations aux frontières de la danse expérimentale, du théâtre corporel et de la performance, des oeuvres à l’esthétique forte qui fondent sa réputation internationale.

The stage is on an incline, covered with removable charcoal grey plates, evoking the substrata of a cemetery or a geological site. Trap doors are opened at will; the earth shifts and undulates. The bodies of the performers disappear into the bowels of the earth. With this black and white fable, there is an orgy of images. The Greek artist, Dimitris Papaioannou, stages the tension between life and our demise. Without beginning or end, this dreamlike creation evokes ancient and modern myths, conjuring up masterpieces of visual art in an ode to the most powerful of creators: death. The chaos of the world has never been so poetic.
Dimitris Papaioannou gained early recognition as a comics artist and painter, before taking on the performing arts as a director, choreographer, performer and founder of the illustrious Edafos Dance Theatre. Since 1986, he has dedicated himself to creating intensely visual original works – a hybrid of experimental dance, physical theatre and performance art.
