Biographie
Lucy M. May is a contemporary dancer based in Montreal. She studied contemporary dance at LADMMI in Montreal and the Rotterdam Dance Academy (CODARTS) in the Netherlands. She also spent countless hours dancing to DNB and dubstep during that time, which lead her to create :::HAND|EYE::: — a collaboration which exploited the talents of over fifty dancers, DJs, and VJs between 2007 and 2009.
Lucy began dancing professionally in creations made for unusual locations and contexts (e.g. on a pier, in private living rooms, with a horse), as well as in white cubes and black boxes. She believes that the spaces that house dance are quintessential to understanding movement.
Creating and performing alongside artists from many disciplines (notably filmmaker Eduardo Menz, inventor David Birnbaum, multimedia artist Christian Chiergo, musician Xocas Miedije and textile artist Denise Richard) has also issued her an elastic notion of dance performance: the malleability of the choreographic form is an inspiration, and inasmuch, she has acted in many interactive, improvised and impromptu performances since the late nineties.
Lucy's work as an dancer include the creations of Kamerdans (2006) by Meyer-Chaffaud DC, Tribology (2007) by Ola Maciejewska, Kick it Off (2009) by Sasha Kleinplatz (commissioned by the Fredericton Playhouse), Fake (2009) by Melissa Raymond, One Woman, One Potato (2010) by Georgia Rondos, and Le nombre d'or (2010) by Marie Chouinard, whose company she joined in October 2009.
Enthusiastic about sharing and developing movement with others, Lucy has also taught at LADMMI – L’école de danse contemporaine, The Charlotte Street Art Center, and Port City Dance Academy; assisted Sylvain LaFortune in partnering workshops for Le Regroupement quebecois de la danse; and has rehearsal directed for José Navas Compangie Flak.
